National Youth Wind Orchestra

National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain
Britain's top Youth Orchestra, one of the world's best

The National Youth Wind Orchestra was formed as the British Youth Wind Orchestra by the late Eric McGavin in 1968. Members of the group are between 15 and 21 years old, and are extremely talented and well qualified musicians. The title of the group changed to 'National Youth Wind Orchestra' shortly after it was founded, as it was felt that the word 'National' better represented the orchestra's extremely high standards of playing.

The NYWO meets twice a year – at Easter and in the Summer. On each of these occasions, musicians participate in twelve day residential courses. Concerts are given throughout the year, both in the country and abroad, ad the NYWO has played in locations as distant as Prague, and offers members of the orchestra trips to various sightseeing and tourist locations while abroad.

Students who wish to audition for the orchestra must be prepared to demonstrate their abilities and must have a recommendation from a teacher. Auditions occur in the autumn, throughout the country. Students who are accepted for the year are expected to attend both Easter and Summer courses. They may audition at the age of twelve, and remain in the orchestra until the age of twenty-one. There is a a small administration charge for the opportunity to audition.

Past members of the NYWO have gone on to play in bands and orchestras throughout the world, and many of them consider their time in the orchestra to have been deeply influential to their development. The NYWO continues to offer young musicians the chance to enhance their skills and experience playing in a real orchestra setting with the very best of their peers. Among the current offerings of the NYWO is a chamber course available to members 14-17, taught by renowned musicians and teachers. The residential chamber music courses last for five days. A saxophone course is also offered.

Whenever possible, the orchestra commissions new works. Composers work with the members of the orchestra on new compositions for performance.
