Music And The City

Used to play the violin but haven't touched it for 10 years? Just started to play the cello but don't have anyone to play music with? Professional Musician who wants to play chamber music with colleagues? Then come to Music And The City!

What is Music And The City?

MATC connects amateur and professional string musicians and music-lovers through regular musical evenings in Central London.

arts club london chamber musicAmateur musicians from across the capital come together to play string ensemble music in an environment inspired by the musical salons of 1920s Vienna. The evening will also feature performances from professional musicians, and the opportunity to play chamber music with other amateurs.

From 9pm each evening, professional musicians come and join the party - to play quartets, discuss music, and socialise into the small hours...

Our Mission

To create an opportunity for inexperienced musicians to play with like-minded people in a fun, informal and sophisticated atmosphere. To create a great event for the many young professional Londoners who enjoy playing musical instruments, but could never find the time to join a regular orchestra or meet other amateur musicians.

Evening Programme

  • Welcome Reception from 6.30pm

  • String Ensemble: rehearsal (music tbc) directed by Simon Hewitt Jones

  • Informal Performance in front of guests

  • Optional Chamber Music in smaller groups eg String Quartet, with coaching from professional musicians

  • The Bar will be open throughout the evening, serving a wide range of food and drink

  • Professional musicians arrive from 9pm to socialise and play chamber music!

  • Late licence available up to 3am

Our Venue: No.1 Leicester Square

1901 arts club waterloo musical evening amateur soiree

Our new venue, No.1 Leicester Square, is a stunning place to play music, and we're really thrilled to be bringing Music And The City to the heart of London! Our new location in the heart of the West End makes MATC accessible wherever you live or work in London!

The Club overlooks Leicester Square, and gives us ample space to host lots of chamber music groups throughout the evening. We wanted a venue that would be a perfect place to connect musicians, artists and people who share an appreciation and interest for the arts, and to enable those who work in the City to find a fulfilling and rewarding outlet for their musical creativity.

No.1 Leicester Square gives Music And The City a home where our beliefs can thrive: we think the arts are integral and essential parts of our society, and that dedicated exploration of the arts - especially music - can inspire and bring clarity to our day to day life. Finally we have the place to do just that!

1901 music and the city arts music evening soireeIn addition to the stunning 7th floor room (top of page) where we rehearse the String Ensemble, No.1 Leicester Square features a private cash bar serving a wide selection of food and drink, which will be open throughout the evening.

The main reception room (right) is the place to meet old and new friends, and to hear Mozart String Quartets. There are further rooms available for chamber music, and we'll have available a wide selection of chamber music for you to play through informally with friends.
