Low-cost flexibility: Garageband recording software by Apple

Apple computers and software have always led the pack when it comes to being user-friendly and accessible to the more creatively inclined. Ask any graphic designer his or her preferences, and you’ll most likely hear about their Macintosh. The appeal doesn’t stop with the fine arts, however. Apple computers have taken the amateur music world by storm with the advent of its program, GarageBand, a self-proclaimed “personal recording studio — where it’s easy to make a song whether you’re a first-time musician or a seasoned pro.”

Amateur musicians often dream of being able to professionally record their music, yet not everyone has the option of going to a recording studio. For many, this opportunity has always been unrealistic due to factors of cost or location. Programs like GarageBand open up opportunities for musicians through an easy-to-use graphic interface that performs most of the same functions as an actual recording studio. There is no doubt that the sound quality of a professionally engineered session is much higher, but GarageBand can hold its own - producing recordings that are of high enough quality to share with others, or use as possible demos.

The original GarageBand software probably isn’t enough for those interested in producing Classical music through the program. Apple has made additional software, however, to suit individual preferences. For the Classical music genre, this is the GarageBand Jam Pack 4 Symphony Orchestra bundle. While the original program comes with limited orchestral instrument sounds, you can purchase this bundle, which contains approximately 30 additional stringed, brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. As with most of GarageBand’s sounds, each instrument is recorded live and retains a strikingly realistic tone. A Midi interface can be used to adjust pitch and tonality, and to play the notes, or you can use the keyboard within the program, skipping any additional hardware add-ons. Or, if you’d rather play your own instrument in place of a digital version of it, all you need is an interface and a microphone. It’s that easy.

Garageband - a'home recording studio' for Amateur Musicians

If you are a pianist looking to try your hand at composing symphonic pieces, GarageBand might be exactly what you need to make this happen. The program allows you to adjust the direction of sounds from within the output speakers, in the same way that the sounds of an orchestra would be heard. You can move the violins to the left, the cellos to the right, the percussion in the back, and so on. You can also control the dynamics, expression, and articulation in real time as you play, using such features as note velocity, the mod wheel, and the pitch bend wheel. Finally, the program comes with its own editing function, giving you the opportunity to go back over the piece after it is played in real time, in order to fine tune any portion of the composition.

Amateur musicians no longer have a reason to limit their musical output based on income or proximity to a recording studio. Since GarageBand comes standard on all Macintosh computers, Apple has once again given artists an easy, inexpensive way to create.
