19th-century German(?) Full-Size Double Bass: £8,000

by John Morton

Width at Upper Bout: 21" (53.4cm)
Width at Centre Bout: 14.5" (36.8cm)
Width at Lower Bout: 27.25" (69.2cm)
Length of Body: 47" (119.4cm)
Depth of Body: 9" (22.9cm)
Scale Length: 43" (109.2cm)
D-Neck
Renovated 2003-4 by Nick Woodward & Martin Hansford of The Violin
Shop, Bristol (new neck, fingerboard, & bridge).

Having recently directly compared it to an 1886 Riviere and Hawkes
(asking price £19,500.00) and a c.1890 Jerome Thibouville-Lamy
(asking price £14,000.00), I can confirm that it holds its own sound-
wise magnificently - they really didn't sound twice as good!
Consequently, I think it is well worth the asking price despite not
having a designer-label - what you hear is what you get!
